My Story

Genevieve Viel

Hello everyone, for those of you who don't know me, my name is Geneviève Viel. I am 44 years old, married, and have two children. One of them is named Eva Saint-Surin (15 years old), and the other is Mya Saint-Surin (9 years old). Today, I wanted to share my story related to sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease) with the goal of inspiring others affected by this condition.

My journey began with a diagnosis of sickle cell anemia (type SS) at the age of three at the Montreal Children's Hospital. It was a diagnosis that could have defined my existence, but instead, it ignited a passion within me to navigate the complex fields of healthcare, ultimately making me the compassionate nurse I am today.

From the very first visits and treatments with the doctor, my fascination with the human body was born. Every encounter with healthcare professionals left an indelible mark on my young mind, sparking a curiosity that would push me toward a career dedicated to caring for others.

As I grew up, I witnessed the challenges faced by patients living with chronic illnesses, their resilience needed to endure pain, and the unwavering support provided by healthcare professionals. Inspired by their dedication, I knew I wanted to be a beacon of hope for others.

I must admit that my path to becoming a nurse was not without obstacles. The rigors of college and university studies, as well as the demands of clinical training, tested my determination.

With each hurdle I overcame, my passion for nursing only grew stronger. I quickly realized the importance of my role, not only as a caregiver but also as a source of comfort and empathy for those in need.

Today, with 22 years of nursing experience, I am a pillar of strength and compassion in my field.

My journey from patient to caregiver has given me a unique perspective, allowing me to connect with my patients on a deeper level, to understand their struggles, and to instill in them the hope for a brighter future.

In my daily practice, I embody the values of empathy, integrity, and professionalism. I approach each patient encounter with unwavering dedication, ensuring that every person I care for feels seen, heard, and valued.

Whether administering treatment, providing emotional support, or simply lending a listening ear, my passion for my work shines through in every interaction.

To me, nursing is more than just a career: it is a calling, born from a lifetime of experiences and fueled by a deep sense of purpose.

From being diagnosed with sickle cell disease at the age of three to becoming an experienced nurse, my story is a testament to the transformative power of resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you to my parents, my family, my spouse, my children, and friends for your support.
